Impact of Carbon Dioxide on the Non-Catalytic Thermal Decomposition of Methane
Economically and ecologically, the thermal decomposition of methane is a promising process for large scale hydrogen production. In this experimental study, the non-catalytic decomposition of methane in the presence of small amounts of carbon dioxide was analyzed. At large scales, natural gas or biomethane are possible feedstocks for the thermal decomposition and can obtain up to 5% carbon dioxide. Gas recycling can increase the amount of secondary components even further. Experiments were conducted in a packed flow reactor at temperatures from 1250 to 1350 K. The residence time and the amounts of carbon dioxide and hydrogen in the feed were varied. A methane conversion of up to 55.4% and a carbon dioxide conversion of up to 44.1% were observed. At 1300 K the hydrogen yield was 95% for a feed of methane diluted in nitrogen. If carbon dioxide was added to the feed at up to a tenth with regard to the amount of supplied methane, the hydrogen yield was reduced to 85%. Hydrogen in the feed decreases the reaction rate of the methane decomposition and increases the carbon dioxide conversion
Towards DIB mapping in galaxies beyond 100 Mpc. A radial profile of the 5780.5 diffuse interstellar band in AM 1353-272 B
Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs) are non-stellar weak absorption features of
unknown origin found in the spectra of stars viewed through one or several
clouds of Interstellar Medium (ISM). Research of DIBs outside the Milky Way is
currently very limited. Specifically spatially resolved investigations of DIBs
outside of the Local Group is, to our knowledge, inexistent. Here, we explore
the capability of the high sensitivity Integral Field Spectrograph, MUSE, as a
tool to map diffuse interstellar bands at distances larger than 100 Mpc. We use
MUSE commissioning data for AM 1353-272 B, the member with highest extinction
of the "The Dentist's Chair", an interacting system of two spiral galaxies.
High signal-to-noise spectra were created by co-adding the signal of many
spatial elements distributed in a geometry of concentric elliptical half-rings.
We derived decreasing radial profiles for the equivalent width of the
5780.5 DIB both in the receding and approaching side of the companion
galaxy up to distances of 4.6 kpc from the center of the galaxy.
Likewise, interstellar extinction, as derived from the Halpha/Hbeta line ratio
displays a similar trend, with decreasing values towards the external parts.
This translates into an intrinsic correlation between the strength of the DIB
and the extinction within AM 1353-272 B consistent with the current existing
global trend between these quantities when using measurements for both Galactic
and extragalactic sight lines. Mapping of DIB strength in the Local Universe as
up to now only done for the Milky Way seems feasible. This offers a new
approach to study the relationship between DIBs and other characteristics and
species of the ISM in different conditions as those found in our Galaxy to the
use of galaxies in the Local Group and/or single sightlines towards supernovae,

Mediators and Cytokines in Persistent Allergic Rhinitis and Nonallergic Rhinitis with Eosinophilia Syndrome
Background: Patients with nonallergic rhinitis with eosinophilia syndrome (NARES) show typical symptoms of persistent allergic rhinitis (PAR). The aim of the present study was to compare nasal cytokine patterns between NARES and PAR. Methods: Nasal secretions of 31 patients suffering from NARES, 20 patients with PAR to house dust mite and 21 healthy controls were collected using the cotton wool method and analyzed for interleukin (IL)-1 beta, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, IL-13, IL-17, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and macrophage inflammatory protein-1 beta (MIP-1 beta) by Bio-Plex Cytokine Assay as well as eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) and tryptase by UniCAP-FEIA. Results: NARES and PAR presented elevated levels of tryptase, while ECP was markedly increased solely in NARES compared to both the controls and PAR. Elevated levels of IL-1 beta, IL-17, IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha and MCP-1 were found in NARES compared to the controls as well as PAR. MIP-1 beta was elevated in NARES and PAR, while IL-4, IL-6 and G-CSF showed increased levels in NARES, and IL-5 was elevated in PAR only. Conclusions: In patients with NARES and PAR, eosinophils and mast cells appear to be the pivotal cells of inflammation, reflected by high levels of tryptase and ECP as well as IL-5 and GM-CSF as factors for eosinophil migration and survival. The elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines in NARES may indicate the chronic, self-perpetuating process of inflammation in NARES which seems to be more pronounced than in PAR. Selenium-Binding Protein 1 Indicates Myocardial Stress and Risk for Adverse Outcome in Cardiac Surgery
Selenium-binding protein 1 (SELENBP1) is an intracellular protein that has been detected in the circulation in response to myocardial infarction. Hypoxia and cardiac surgery affect selenoprotein expression and selenium (Se) status. For this reason, we decided to analyze circulating SELENBP1 concentrations in patients (n = 75) necessitating cardioplegia and a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) during the course of the cardiac surgery. Serum samples were collected at seven time-points spanning the full surgical process. SELENBP1 was quantified by a highly sensitive newly developed immunological assay. Serum concentrations of SELENBP1 increased markedly during the intervention and showed a positive association with the duration of ischemia (ρ = 0.6, p < 0.0001). Elevated serum SELENBP1 concentrations at 1 h after arrival at the intensive care unit (post-surgery) were predictive to identify patients at risk of adverse outcome (death, bradycardia or cerebral ischemia, "endpoint 1"; OR 29.9, CI 3.3-268.8, p = 0.00027). Circulating SELENBP1 during intervention (2 min after reperfusion or 15 min after weaning from the CPB) correlated positively with an established marker of myocardial infarction (CK-MB) measured after the intervention (each with ρ = 0.5, p < 0.0001). We concluded that serum concentrations of SELENBP1 were strongly associated with cardiac arrest and the duration of myocardial ischemia already early during surgery, thereby constituting a novel and promising quantitative marker for myocardial hypoxia, with a high potential to improve diagnostics and prediction in combination with the established clinical parameters
Alterations of alveolar type II cells and intraalveolar surfactant after bronchoalveolar lavage and perfluorocarbon ventilation. An electron microscopical and stereological study in the rat lung
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Repeated bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) has been used in animals to induce surfactant depletion and to study therapeutical interventions of subsequent respiratory insufficiency. Intratracheal administration of surface active agents such as perfluorocarbons (PFC) can prevent the alveolar collapse in surfactant depleted lungs. However, it is not known how BAL or subsequent PFC administration affect the intracellular and intraalveolar surfactant pool.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Male wistar rats were surfactant depleted by BAL and treated for 1 hour by conventional mechanical ventilation (<it>Lavaged-Gas</it>, n = 5) or partial liquid ventilation with PF 5080 (<it>Lavaged-PF5080</it>, n = 5). For control, 10 healthy animals with gas (<it>Healthy-Gas</it>, n = 5) or PF5080 filled lungs (<it>Healthy-PF5080</it>, n = 5) were studied. A design-based stereological approach was used for quantification of lung parenchyma and the intracellular and intraalveolar surfactant pool at the light and electron microscopic level.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Compared to <it>Healthy</it>-lungs, <it>Lavaged</it>-animals had more type II cells with lamellar bodies in the process of secretion and freshly secreted lamellar body-like surfactant forms in the alveoli. The fraction of alveolar epithelial surface area covered with surfactant and total intraalveolar surfactant content were significantly smaller in <it>Lavaged</it>-animals. Compared with <it>Gas</it>-filled lungs, both <it>PF5080</it>-groups had a significantly higher total lung volume, but no other differences.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>After BAL-induced alveolar surfactant depletion the amount of intracellularly stored surfactant is about half as high as in healthy animals. In lavaged animals short time liquid ventilation with PF5080 did not alter intra- or extracellular surfactant content or subtype composition.</p
Discovery of an old nova remnant in the Galactic globular cluster M 22
A nova is a cataclysmic event on the surface of a white dwarf in a binary
system that increases the overall brightness by several orders of magnitude.
Although binary systems with a white dwarf are expected to be overabundant in
globular clusters (GCs) compared to the Galaxy, only two novae from Galactic
globular clusters have been observed. We present the discovery of an emission
nebula in the Galactic globular cluster M 22 (NGC 6656) in observations made
with the integral-field spectrograph MUSE. We extract the spectrum of the
nebula and use the radial velocity determined from the emission lines to
confirm that the nebula is part of NGC 6656. Emission-line ratios are used to
determine the electron temperature and density. It is estimated to have a mass
of 1 to solar masses. This mass and the emission-line
ratios indicate that the nebula is a nova remnant. Its position coincides with
the reported location of a 'guest star', an ancient Chinese term for
transients, observed in May 48 BCE. With this discovery, this nova may be one

Image Compression for Geological Mapping and Novelty Detection
We describe an image-comparison technique of Heidemann and Ritter [4,5] that
uses image compression, and is capable of: (i) detecting novel textures in a
series of images, as well as of: (ii) alerting the user to the similarity of a
new image to a previously-observed texture. This image-comparison technique
has been implemented and tested using our Astrobiology Phone-cam system, which
employs Bluetooth communication to send images to a local laptop server in the
field for the image-compression analysis. We tested the system in a field site
displaying a heterogeneous suite of sandstones, limestones, mudstones and
coalbeds. Some of the rocks are partly covered with lichen. The imagematching
procedure of this system performed very well with data obtained through our
field test, grouping all images of yellow lichens together and grouping all
images of a coal bed together, and giving a 91% accuracy for similarity
detection. Such similarity detection could be employed to make maps of
different geological units. The novelty-detection performance of our system
was also rather good (a 64% accuracy). Such novelty detection may become
valuable in searching for new geological units, which could be of
astrobiological interest. By providing more advanced capabilities for
similarity detection and novelty detection, this image-compression technique
could be useful in giving more scientific autonomy to robotic planetary
rovers, and in assisting human astronauts in their geological exploration
